Filling a W-9 or W-8BEN form as a Nigerian online affiliate marketer

If you are Nigerian online affiliate marketer and working for a US company, one of the things that may normally be requested by your employer or the company from you is a filled w9 form. What is a W9 form? Well, it's basicaly a form the US tax agency, the IRS recommends that employers request from their employees providing details about who they realy are so as to know how to tax them. Online affiliate marketers may not get paid their earnings if they don't fill a form like this but whether they'd have to fill one of not would depend on if they are resident in the USA. Also, employers may get fined if they keep employees that don't submit a W9 form.

Nigerians who are resident in the USA and working for a company will have to fill the W9 form but those who are not US citizens and probably resident outside the USA such as in Nigeria would just have to fill a W-8BEN form.

I've received requests for a filled W9 form from several US companies I'm affiliated to such as Hubpages, Bluehost, Chitika and MyUs because I've earned some income from them and they required it before I was to be paid by them. I just had to fill the W8BEN form since I was a Nigerian resident and non US citizen.

Some US companies might provide an online W9 or W8BEN form for their employees to fill while others would have you download it from the IRS website, fill and then submit it to them either by email or hard copy. It's quite an easy thing to do and it just requires you provide some basic details about your person so as to help them know how to treat your income without going against US tax laws.

What I normally advise newbies to do is first of all start blogging and write up to 1000 blog post. By the time your website is getting traffic, you can then join an affiliate program that most identifies with your blog and you'd be making money.

W8-Ben requires Foreign tax identifying number.

How do one get that?
