Are Laptops also going solar? Yes they are as Samsung unveils what is expected to be the world's first solar powered laptop.

What really is a solar laptop? It simply means a laptop as we know that is powerd by energy from the Sun. The title itself is something exciting and I guess in the world's onngoing campaign to go green, this is probably the best thing tech companies have brought to the table.

A major part of human activities today are mostly done on the pc and not just any pc, most users are going with laptop computers. The good thing about Laptops is that you can use them from almost anywhere. It is mobile, flexible, light and even more convenient to use at most times of the day. Most computer users would find it hard to spend a day without their laptops.

Businesses too make use of laptops for several reasons and this has helped improved the turnover for many. I was already excited when I heard about the Google Chromebook - A laptop that probably doesn't have any OS installed on it or any hard drive and is built just for internet usage. Call it the beloved child of cloud computing and you wouldn't be far.

Anyway, let's focus more on Solar powered laptops. How do they really work?
First thing and foremost, it would need sunlight but what about the batteries? Will a Solar laptop operate without a battery? Well, technically there are already a lot of solar powered peripherals you can connect to laptops to boost its battery power since it convert solar energy to DC but Samsung's new laptop is somehow more innovative. You can actually use it without a battery and just rely on the power of the Sun. The world seems to be going more green with this latest device and this means that as long as there is the sun, there will always be a powered laptop.

I'm guessing this would be a great product for developing nations which are already growing economically such as in Africa where there is abundant sunlight almost daily although the market can still be huge for companies in developed nations like the USA and UK who are constantly seeking to invest in green technologies.

It is one thing to use a laptop receiving a battery boost from an external solar panel but another thing to use a laptop that can run only on sunlight. This can really help reduce the amount of batteries that build up toxic wastes. Besides, laptops like this would probably last longer and work faster, be more portable and phase out existing laptops.

One question one would also ask is "Will the new solar laptop be able to work without the sun"?. Well it also has a battery incorporated into it such that for every 1 hr of solar charging, you would be able to use it for 2hrs on battery time without the sun.

The price for Samsung's Solar laptop is set at about $399 and is expected to hit US stores soon. Samsung had already released the first model titled "Samsung NC215S" in Africa and it was well received.
