If you are seller on the Paypal network, one of the challenges you may have to face is fraudulent payments, especially on the part of buyers. How do you confirm if a payment has been sent to you by Paypal?

A. Check your email and Paypal account history
One of the easiest ways to do this is by simply logging into your Paypal account and reading the status of the payment, if there is any like that. At times, a simple email supposedly from Paypal may not be enough to convince you that payment has been sent and you would need to verify this especially if you are shipping physical items to the buyer who may have already paid you.

B. Make use of an IPN and handler
So logging into your Paypal account and confirming the transfer can be a good step but another way to do this is by integrating an Instant Payment Notification (IPN) handler on your website's server. If you don't know how to install it, you may get a web programmer to do it for you.

What the IPN does is to simply:
- Receive a message from Paypal of a payment
- Make a query to Paypal
- Receive a response from Paypal confirming that it is true or not

Once the processes are complete, your IPN script may then include the buyer's details on your order list or database

All you will then do is to process verified orders from your database by shipping to buyers.

So whichever method you use, you can easily confirm if you have received a Payment from Paypal.

Note: Paypal payments can be reversed within 45 days so it may be safer to ship to verified users only. Also if you are selling downloadable or digital items, Paypal doesn't offer much protection in case of reversals for items not shipped to physical address.
