apk is the default extension for application files that are installable on the Kindle fire HD and this means that to install an application, you'd need to have the apk file already on your device.

Getting you apk file
There are couple of ways to get apk files downloaded on your Kindle device such as the following:

- Amazon appstore: http://www.amazon.com/mobile-apps/b?ie=UTF8&node=2350149011
- Opera appstore: apps.opera.com
- Other apk sharing sites
- Your computer
- Android devices

How to install apk file from Amazon app store
The Amazon appstore is the official site that supports Kindle Fire and by default, you can easily download a lot of apps for free or paid and have it working on your device. If you are a in a supported region, then you should use this option

- Just Tab on appstore from your home screen
- Select the app you want to install
- Allow the installation
- Your app would be installed in your apps folder

How to install apk file from other sources
For source that are not officially recognized or supported for Kindle, you can also install the apps to your Kindle after changing some settings

- Go to your settings > More > Allow third part installations on Kindle
- Ok and save the settings
- Go to apps.opera.com to download and install ES file explorer
- Go to an apk location to download the file. You can alos download to your computer and then save it
- Open the apk file using ES file explorer
- Allow installation of the file
- Follow the installation prompts
- The app would be installed in your apps folder
