When it come to getting WiFi hotspots in Nigeria there's are not a lot of places that are commonly known and that provide reliable services. However, you would probably see a couple of these WiFi services at shopping malls, hotels, airports and big restaurants.

One of the WiFi services I have used recently was at Adeniran Ogunsanya's shopping mall Surulere. The network is always on during their open hours and this was the one being offered by Oxygen, one of the ISPs at Shoprite.

If you've got a WiFi capable device and find yourself at Shoprite Surulere, a scan for w WiFi networks being made with your device would reveal to you that there are a lot of other WiFi networks with some of them being setup for private use while others are for public use.

In order to be able to connect to these WiFi networks and browse the internet, what you'd need to at least have a password.

Oxygen wifi is one of those commercial Wifi providers at public outlets such as Shoprite and in order to have access to their services, all you need to do is to first register and then buy a subscription in order to use it on a time based plan.

One of the reasons why I love their services is because there are no download limits. I recently inquired about their speed and was told it was about 2MBps.

You could subscribe for a 1hr(N100), 3hrs(N250) or 7 hrs(N500) plan which normally expire after 2days, 1 week and 2 weeks respectively. I bought the 3 hrs plan for N250 and have been using it to make downloads. They also have a monthly plan that goes for N1500 for 30 hrs.

You could make use of their wifi services on your phone, tablet, laptop or other device with wifi detectors and it would work. Currently I've tried it on my laptop as well as my Kindle Fire HD which I've used to download some movies from the movie store.

Actually, my laptop was first configured and then I configured my Kindle fire myself since I already knew the settings. You just need to know your username and password and then get a voucher and you will be able to connect to the internet after first going to oxygen.com.ng or oxygen.net.ng.

There are no data limits but there is just a limit to the time used. So this if for people who want to use the internet without having to pay per byte. You could always logout if the speed is slow and use it later on.

How fast is their service?
How fast is Oxygen Wifi at the shopping mall? Well they said it was 2mbps at their peak periods but I think I only got to that speed on a Sunday. Other days, it was not as fast as my MTN Hynet wifi which is also at 2mbps. The only reason why I don't like using my Hynet connection for making heavy downloads for now is because I'm on a data based plan.

So, Oxygen wifi is a bit fast but not always fast. I guess one way to check the internet speed on a broadband service like theirs is to visit any of those websites that do speed test e.g. http://my.verizon.com/services/speedtest/.

What it takes to connect to Oxygen wifi
- Get registered for a free account(First time users)
- Pay for a subscription plan
- Go to the website oxygen.com.ng
- Connect to the internet

Afterwards, you can go to any website you want for browsing.

You need to have the WiFi password before connecting with your Kindle. I use a personal WiFi modem I got from Smile 4G and it's really reliable.
