How to get your MTN security number

After visiting MTN Play website today with a view to downloading a Nigerian song from MTN, I was requested to log in first with my MTN security number. Unfortunately, I didn't understand what this means. Whay must someone have to use a strange number just to get service from MTN? I though they already had a dataase of all their registered customers and so why the need to request for another set of number just to download mp3 songs from MTN play?

Well, it seems that the new thing now is that MTN has introduced a new number they call security number. According to MTN, the introduction of the new security number is in a bid to protect customers from authorized used of their personal details by others to their own detriment. In essence, they are making use of the security number as a way of protecting customers who use their service online or offline. I guess they've discovered that customer's account could be hacked online if a security number was not in place.

What really is this MTN security number? It is basically a set of numbers, a 16 digit number actually which is quite different from your mobile phone number or any other numbers you have have had in the past. I guess this now brings ro 3 the numbers I have to store for myself just to use MTN services. I got to know my MTN share and sell PIN, MTN GSM number and now my MTN security number.

The MTN security is meant to be used on MTN's self service channels such as the MTN play website. Customers are advised not to disclose their security number to anyone once they receive it in an SMS.

The big question now is: How do I get my MTN security number? I don't want to go back to the MTN customer center and stay in line again just to be served.

After doing a bit of research, I learnt that you will have to call MTN customer service on 180, wait to speak to a real person and then request for the number by sms. You will be asked some personal questions as well as your PUK number so get ready to give that to them. In a few minutes, the security number should be send to your phone.

Well, one problem I have with this is that one has to call 180 and you know how calling 180 can be frustrating at times. One may have to wait several hours just get answered and that's if someone actually answers the call rather than a robot. I think one could also get the security number by visiting an MTN security number. Another problem I have is that I've forgotten where I kept my SIM certificate and so don't know how to get my PUK.

The good thing however is that once you get the number, you would be able to do a lot of things yourself without resorting to MTN customer service all the time. One would be able to do SIM swap, MTN share and sell reset as well as access MTN Self service website.
