We all know of the recent ongoing campaign to register all sim cards in Nigeria for all the various GSM networks such as MTN, Glo, Airtel, Etisalat and others. This was due to the directive given to them by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).
Sim registration is meant to help the government as well the the service providers keep a record of all GSM phone users for accountability purposes. Sim registration is also expected to help reduce the rising wave of kidnapping and other mobile phone associated crimes in the country so it is a welcome development and millions of subscribers have showed their willingness to get registered.
However, registration doesn't come easy for most subcribers as they seems to be a lot of delay at registration points at the gsm offices. There is mostly a very long queue of people hoping to get registered and the waiting time can go anywhere from 1 to 4 hours and this has not been encouraging.
Now the sim registration basically involves the following:
- Going to the network's office with your sim or phone and sim certificate if possible
- Going along with valid documentation like id card and utility bill
- Taking a digital photo on the spot
- Providing your fingerprint on the biometric scanner
- Providing your personal details such as occupation, address and status
How to know or check if you have been registered
Now after registration, you are meant to receive a text that will inform you have been registered. Although the text may not come immediately but may take about a week or two but you should also collect the printed receipt or paper confirming your registration from the customer service before leaving your gsm provider's office.
Now if you have already done your registration for a couple of months but still want ot be sure that you have been registered, here is what you can do:
- Send a text to 789 with the word "reg" without the quotes
- Simreg should reply you confirming or denying that you have been registered.
After sending the text to 789 or Simreg, you should receive an immediate reply saying "Your number has been registered. Thank you!"
I know Simreg works for MTN numbers but I am not sure if it is the same for other networks. If it works for your Glo or Airtel, you can pls confirm

Glo subscribers should type 'Reg' and send to 3456 and u wil receive an sms immediately confirming ur status.

I have registered my glo sim and i have been using it e.g (making calls,text and browsing) then later on when ever i want to make call the computer will ask me to go and register the sim again... I registered the glo sim again and still its not working, i called the customer care they told me to wait for about 48 hours and i waited as they told me but still there is no changes.

This whole thing is disgusting to me in respect of other networks that doesn't have confirmation code...does it imply that apart from MTN-NG and GLO-NG, there is no confirmation code for other networks most especially ETISALAT network. The problem we have in this country is lack of future technicalities...WE IMPLIMENT LAWS WITHOUT PUTING SOME MEASURES ON GROUND.
