Know Your Audience
The good thing about blogging is that it has the power to draw an online audience to your website such that the numbers may keep increasing or decreasing depending on how attractive your blog is. As a general rule, every blogger must know what kind of audience that take interest in reading your blog
Getting to know your audience is an important part of blogging. Call it social engineering or whatever, but you need to know what kind of traffic brings web visitors your site and how they respond to your blog posts.
Do they leave comments? Do they leave immediately they see your site?
How many feed readers do have or how many people have subscribed to your blog and are the numbers growing or falling?
How to know your audience
- One way you can get to know the type of audience that you blog brings is by looking at your site stats and view the keywords and key phrases
- One other way is by seeing the kind of comments they leave, if any
- Another way to know them is if they use long comments or short ones

If they leave long comments with good English, then they are mostly educated and perhaps fellow bloggers who want to share in your blog. If they leave no comments despite the high traffic to your site, then they may probably be buyers or just looking for an information they didn't find.
If they spend more time on your site, then they probably would be coming back and you could be having repeat visitors which is good for your blog.
Having an intelligible audience can be great but may not help you make much money from third party advertising, however they could contribute in other ways by means of comments, articles or guest posts. Having a buying audience would help monetize your site properly and you could make loads of money from advertising but they would not add content to your site.
If you are able to know the kind of audience that visits your blog regularly, then you should know how to tailor their needs such that they would always come back for more.
Once you have started a blog and did a lot of blog posts all in a bid to increase your readership and site traffic, what you then do after having huge number of visitors also matters as it will determine if your audience is a staying one or not. Having a high exit rate for your blog is not good for a blog and so you will have to devise a means of keeping your current traffic and improving on it.

@Idris, you can use sign up for feedburner and burn your feeds there, then you create an email box which you will embed into your blog for subcribers

@ Sola, you can drive traffic to your site from search engines by writing more about highly searched keywords
